The Music Department

Music Department

Music plays a vital part in the life of The Downs and the joyous sound of children making music reverberates throughout the school. Our good facilities are used extensively and include six music practice/tuition rooms, a well equipped Music Classroom, a purpose-built theatre and the Charlton Room, a beautiful Victorian room that provides a stunning setting for small, formal concerts.

The Music Department is a vibrant, exciting place full of energy and enthusiasm. All our children are encouraged to take part in as much music making as possible:

  • All year groups attend two Music Lessons a week. The Theory of Music is a curriculum subject in Years 5 and 6.
  • All our children are introduced to and play a number of instruments in the Pre-Prep. These include the violin, the clarinet and the recorder.
  • We have five choirs. It is compulsory for Prep School children to be in a Choir
  • 85% of our children play a musical instrument.
