Headmaster’s Welcome

Headmaster's Welcome

The Downs is a leading independent day Preparatory School for boys and girls aged 4 to 13. It is situated in Charlton House, a magnificent Victorian Mansion surrounded by sixty acres of idyllic parkland just five miles from Bristol.

Our children enjoy a vibrant all round education that is stimulating, challenging and exciting. Academic study is important and we expect all our pupils to adopt a healthy work ethic and achieve high standards, but our view is that to truly educate one must celebrate the creative, the physical and the spiritual as much as the intellectual.

Our aim is to nurture happy, well-rounded, accomplished children. We cherish childhood, we applaud gentleness and humility, we appreciate unaffected good manners and we embrace traditional values. We respect individuality, we encourage positive thinking and we admire success but most essentially quality of character is regarded equally as highly as achievement.

Regularly described as ‘outstanding ambassadors’, our children are caring, considerate, and confident without being arrogant. We are very proud of the ‘Charltonians’ who leave The Downs at thirteen to attend a selection of prestigious senior schools; they are articulate, interesting, well- balanced young people, who have a strong moral sense, and an enthusiasm for the challenges that lie ahead.

We would be delighted to welcome you to The Downs. I would be very pleased to meet you, and our children would be eager to show you around their school. It is a special place, a place of enormous fun but tangible in achievement. We enjoy an excellent national reputation but despite the age of multi-media technology in which we live my experience is that it is a challenge for most parents properly to understand the differences between schools. I genuinely believe that as soon as you enter our gates you will begin to appreciate what distinguishes The Downs from others and I look forward to meeting you.
